Umbertide, the ancient Fratta
Located in the Alta Valle del Tevere, Umbertide rises at the confluence of the Reggia river with the Tiber river. Although we speak of a Pitulum of Roman age, its origins remain uncertain. In the twelfth century it is remembered with the name of Fratta filiorum Uberti, as a fief of descendants of Umberto, Marquis of Tuscany. In 1189 one of these, Ugolino di Uguccione, submitted to the authority of Perugia his lands, including the castle of Fratta.
The Santa Croce Museum: casket of the Signorelli art
The city museum is located in the 14th century church of Santa Croce.
The altarpiece of the Deposition on the high altar, painted by Luca Signorelli in 1516, is the only one of the many works on the table by the Cortonese master who still finds himself in his original site. The same characteristic, rather unusual for a museum, also occurs for the paintings on the side altars.
